Homeopathic remedies are delicate and require proper care to maintain their effectiveness. Understanding a few simple guidelines can help you preserve the shelf-life of your medicines for longer.
Why Proper Storage of Homeopathic Remedies Matters
Unlike regular medicinal drugs or herbs, homeopathic remedies are energy or vibrational remedies. This means that they retain the frequency or energetic signature of the substances that they are made from. The remedies contain no chemical compounds or molecules. They just have the “imprint” of the original substance. This makes homeopathic remedies highly sensitive to environmental factors such as heat, strong light, electromagnetic frequencies, moisture and even certain strong odours.
Improper storage can reduce their potency, cause discolouration and make them ineffective over time.
Ideal Conditions to Store Homeopathic Medicines
To maintain the effectiveness of your remedies, always store them in the right conditions:
- Keep them in a cool and dry place.
- Store remedies away from direct sunlight.
- Maintain a stable room temperature.
- Put them in a clean, closed container or drawer
The best storage space is a simple drawer in your bedroom or living area, as it protects the medicines from both light and temperature fluctuations.
What to Avoid While Storing Homeopathic Remedies
Certain environments can damage your medicines quickly. Avoid keeping the remedies in the following places:
- Refrigerators or freezers
- Direct heat sources such as near gas stoves or appliances
- Places exposed to strong sunlight
- Bathroom cabinets. These are humid spaces which can spoil the remedies.
- Next to electrical appliances or gadgets
A Note on Airport/Customs Scanners
A lot of patients ask me if putting their remedies through the airport scanners when crossing customs will reduce their effectiveness. This is a very valid point and I had a similar question when I was first introduced to homeopathy.
Based on my personal experience and the feedback from homeopaths on this topic, putting the remedies through the airport scanners has not shown to affect the remedies. In fact, since homeopathic remedies are not manufactured in Singapore, all the remedies that I prescribed are imported from a trusted supplier abroad, meaning that all my remedy shipments have to clear customs to arrive in Singapore. Keeping this in mind, so far I have not come across any problems in the quality of my imported remedies, which gives me the assurance that these scanners do not cause any issues with the remedies.
Extra Tips to Maintain the Potency of Homeopathic Medicines
- Storing medicines next to strong-smelling substances such as perfumes, incense sticks, or camphor-based ointments can also interfere with their potency. This is why I tell my patients to avoid keeping the remedies in their regular medicine cupboard, where they might also store other herbal/ayurvedic or traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) products that tend to have a strong smell.
- Another mistake is opening the bottle frequently, which can introduce moisture and contamination. Always close the lid tightly after taking the remedy in order to avoid too much exposure to air.
- Use the remedy cap or a clean spoon to dispense the pills. You should never touch the pills.
- If you are traveling, keep the medicines in a protective case and avoid leaving them in cars where temperatures can rise quickly.
Following these small habits can significantly improve the longevity and effectiveness of your remedies.
