When a patient first comes to see me, I make it a point to explain what Classical Homeopathy is. This is necessary as I have many patients who have taken only homeopathic remedies for their ailments since childhood and have certain expectations of how they should be treated. For example, if a patient comes to me with acid reflux, menstrual irregularities and sleep problems, they may expect to be given 3 different homeopathic remedies at the first consultation, to address each ailment. This is where classical homeopathy differs.

One of the basic principles of homeopathy is to treat the whole person, not individual symptoms in isolation. It is the “whole” person who is unwell and each physical problem is an outward manifestation of the person’s imbalance. If I were to give the patient 3 remedies to address each problem, then the treatment approach cannot be considered homeopathic - this approach, also known as “polypharmacy” in the homeopathic circle, is comparable to prescribing homeopathic remedies in an allopathic way. Classical homeopaths, such as myself, prescribe single remedies, chosen on the basis of the entire symptom totality, covering all aspects of the person, physical as well as mental and emotional.

Once the carefully chosen homeopathic remedy is taken under the tongue and “touches” the body’s rich network of blood vessels and nerves, the healing reaction begins. The remedy provides an energetic stimulus or “push” for the body to kick-start the healing process. In the case of the example given, the patient will experience improvements in sleep first, before experiencing improvements in the gastric ailments and menstrual irregularities. This is because a true homeopathic reaction follows a direction of healing from the inner, most vital organs to the outer, more peripheral organs. This type of reaction is deep and long-lasting and this is what Classical Homeopathy tries to achieve. By giving several remedies at the same time, the body does not get an opportunity for deep healing that addresses the root of the problem. From my experience, there is a high likelihood that the ailments will re-occur when treated with the polypharmacy approach.
